Store views and languages
If you run several store views (languages or countries), decide which one the app opens. Either build one app per region with the matching start URL, or start on a store selector page.
Speed
Magento's default Luma theme ships a lot of JavaScript (RequireJS, Knockout). On mid-range phones that's seconds of work before the page is usable. Options, from easiest:
- Enable JS bundling and minification, defer non-critical scripts.
- Optimise images and enable lazy loading.
- Move to a lighter frontend theme for mobile.
Caching and customer data
Magento serves cached pages and then loads private data (mini-cart, customer name) by AJAX. This works in a WebView exactly as in mobile Chrome, and sessions persist between app launches.
Checkout
Test each payment method: Braintree/PayPal pop-ups, 3-D Secure challenges and redirect-based gateways must return to the order success page inside the app. Keep the payment domains inside the app's link scope if they redirect.
Make it app-like
Add native bottom tabs for Home, Categories, Cart and Account, and use push for order shipped and back-in-stock alerts.
Frequently asked
Does Magento have an official app?
Not a ready-made branded app for each store. PWA frontends exist, and a web to app converter turns your existing storefront into an Android app quickly.
Will my Magento extensions work in the app?
Frontend extensions work as on mobile web, because the app shows your live storefront.
